If you’ve ever wondered why some people make it when others don’t, most of the time it’s down to persistence. So, give yourself an advantage by focusing on developing the habit of persistence. This page will show you how.

Step 1 Repetition

Take the 30 day persistence challenge. Listen along as child psychologist Carole Betterfly and radio presenter Dom Dalston read the chapter on Persistence from Napoleon Hill’s book ‘Think and Grow Rich’.

Step 2 Know what you want

Know exactly what you want. Hill says that this is the most important of all the steps! It’s also the hardest step. Count yourself fortunate if you already know.

You have to look within and find out what excites you. Living a life of purpose, gives you focus. As a result, it will develop your capabilities and your character and it will cause you to develop incredible persistence.

If you have trouble determining what you want, ask what it is you wish to avoid. It stands to reason that you want the opposite of what you want to avoid.

Therefore, it all starts in your imagination. If you imagine how things would be when you achieve your goal and you feel very good about it, you’re on the right track. Think big and bold!

Step 3 Desire

How much do you want it? Does thinking about the achieved goal make you happy, does it meet all your needs? If so then the chances are you have a strong desire and Hill says that this will help you persist. A strong desire makes giving up very hard, your desire will keep coming back and pestering you to continue.

Step 4 Self-Reliance

Believe in your innate ability to be persistent. If you have some negative beliefs or limitations in your own mind about your abilities then try auto-suggestion through affirmations. You need to believe that you have a very persistent, tough, indomitable nature and you do. Self-reliance is important because it may be that you are the only person in the world who sees the importance and value of what you are doing at the present moment. Stick with your plan and followers will rally behind you when you persist.

Step 5  Have a plan

Napoleon Hill says that even a weak and impractical plan will encourage persistence. Any plan is better than none at all. If you can follow your own plan, you are well on the way to following more detailed and precise plans that will emerge over time. They will evolve from what you are doing at the moment.

Step 6 Am I being persistent?

Gather evidence of persistence throughout your day. Note any times you’ve been called on to be persistent during the day. This will motivate you to persist and it will give you evidence that you are staying the course. This, in turn, will strengthen your resolve. Take the persistence challenge. Step 7 Accurate Knowledge

Remove the guesswork. You need confidence that you have the right knowledge. Acting on accurate knowledge is never a waste of time, however, action based on guesswork is a gamble. So, act on the best and most accurate knowledge you can acquire thus maximising your chances of persisting.

Step 8 Co-operation

Working with others shows you how to persist. It works in two ways.

Firstly, you’ll witness others struggling and learn that you can help them and watch them persisting. This means that you benefit from their experiences.

Secondly, it will hold you to account. Therefore, it will be harder for you to come up with excuses and alibis if you don’t follow through.

Step 9 Will Power

Willpower focuses the mind like a laser beam. If your concentration is dissipated, for instance, when you’ve started lots of projects, or if you’re not giving all your attention to the task a hand, engage will power so that the time gets put to achieving one of your goals. Always be focused.

Step 10 Habit

Get into the habit of being persistent. For instance, have regular meetings with people of ambition. Or, if you’re in sales, aim to pitch a certain number of prospects before 10 am. It’s a good idea to develop and stick to an empowering morning routine. Accomplishing daily goals you’ve set yourself, will cause you to be habitually persistent.
